Quality isn’t designing something that simply looks good, it’s crafting an outdoor environment with the right materials and products, symbiotic water features, living plants and trees that will continue to thrive long after the project is completed.
Gibbons - A Family’s Modern Garden Playground
Our clients for this project were a Vancouver family who dearly wanted to turn the plain and neglected backyard space of their new home into a place they’d love to spend time in. We worked to include a number of amenities suited to each family member’s needs and we were able to create distinct spaces for these contained in a relatively small area, without it ever feeling crowded.
The parents are avid entertainers, so we built a covered outdoor kitchen with stainless steel countertops and backsplash, porcelain tile-covered cabinetry for stainless steel insert-drawer cabinets, and a top-of-the-line stainless steel barbecue. A generous outdoor dining space can fit all of their guests and sits under a timber-beam pergola with plexi-glass, copper eavestroughs that drain on rain chains to the garden, and a string of twinkle lights (these were added by our client as one of her personal touches to make it her own). We surrounded a sunken hot tub in an elegant stepped cedar deck in a position from which the family could take in the whole view. This includes a trickling bench waterfall and a fire table feature with sophisticated mid-century modern seating that looks as at home inside as it does outdoors.
The beverage chiller and bar face the open space between the indoor access point and the dining area, which is just another example of how each element in this design has been thought through to maximize function and beauty—everything is exactly where it needs to be, for every entertainment opportunity.
